Job Summary:
Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced Assistant Controller to join a growing team. This position will work closely with the VP of Finance and the Controller to support financial operations, reporting, and compliance. The Assistant Controller will be instrumental in improving financial processes, creating leadership and mentorship for a large accounting team, and providing strategic financial insights. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership experience in accounting, a proven ability to drive process improvements, and the ability to work hands-on with accounting teams during month-end close and audits.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Mentorship: Develop leadership and mentorship for the 28-person accounting team, which includes AR, AP, and accounting functions.
- Month-End Close: Take a hands-on role in month-end close, identifying opportunities to reduce the current 15-20 day process. Aim to streamline and shorten month-end close.
- Audit Support: Lead the team in preparing for and supporting internal and external audits. Work directly with auditors and ensure all documentation and processes are in place.
- Process Improvement: Drive continuous improvement within the accounting department, focusing on efficiencies, best practices, and system enhancements.
- Financial Reporting: Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting in compliance with GAAP, regulatory standards, and company policies.
- Collaboration & Communication: Partner with the accounting team for monthly, quarterly, and annual closing activities, offering clear communication and guidance.
- Financial Planning & Strategy: Assist the VP, Controller with financial planning, forecasting, and strategy execution.
- Internal Controls: Develop and maintain internal controls to ensure the integrity of financial processes and safeguard company assets.
- System Improvement: Work with the team to improve and enhance financial systems and processes, particularly in Excel and SAGE Intacct.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Leadership Experience: Proven experience leading and mentoring teams, ideally in a start-up environment or where a team was built from the ground up.
- Accounting Experience: A well-rounded accounting background with hands-on experience in month-end close processes, audits, and financial reporting.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 2 years in a leadership or senior accounting role.
- Systems Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the use of formulas, pivot tables, and macros. Experience with SAGE Intacct is a plus.
- Audit & Compliance: Strong experience working with auditors and ensuring compliance with GAAP and other financial regulations.
- Process Improvement: Ability to identify inefficiencies and lead process improvements in accounting systems and operations.
- Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally and effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Attention to Detail: High attention to detail and accuracy in all financial reporting and compliance matters.
- Work Ethic: Strong self-starter, Type A personality with the ability to lead, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with Large Teams: Experience managing or leading larger accounting teams, ideally of 10 or more employees.
- Experience in High-Volume Environments: Experience working in high-volume, fast-paced settings, with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Problem-Solving Ability: Ability to think critically, analyze financial data, and provide actionable solutions to improve team performance and operations.
